How to use

  1. Type or paste your text — all counts update instantly.
  2. Set a limit (for example 280 for a post or 160 for a meta description) to see how much room is left.
  3. Your text is saved automatically in this browser so a refresh won’t lose it. Press Clear when you’re done.

Good to know

Characters counts everything including spaces and line breaks; without spaces removes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Many application forms specify which one they use.

Emoji and combined characters (like 👨‍👩‍👧) are counted as one character, the way they appear on screen. Words are detected with your browser’s language-aware word segmentation, so it also works for Japanese and Chinese text.

Reading time assumes about 230 words per minute for English and about 500 characters per minute for Korean and Japanese.

FAQ

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, and the auto-save only uses this browser’s local storage.

How many characters is a tweet?

Posts on X are limited to 280 characters for standard accounts. Set the limit to 280 to check.

Why do other counters show slightly different numbers?

Tools differ in how they count line breaks and emoji. This counter treats what you see as a single character as one.
