How to use
- Your IP address and provider appear at the top as soon as the page opens.
- Press Start test: it measures ping, then download and upload, in about 30–60 seconds. On mobile data choose Data saver.
- Check below whether your connection suits streaming, gaming and video calls. Recent results stay in this browser so you can compare.
Good to know
Download is how fast you receive data (watching video, downloading files); upload is how fast you send it (posting photos, video calls, streaming). Ping is the round-trip time to the server in ms — lower is snappier — and jitter is how much ping varies, which affects lag in games and calls.
| Activity | Speed needed (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Browsing, messaging, music | 5 Mbps+ |
| HD (1080p) video | 5–10 Mbps |
| 4K video | 15–25 Mbps |
| Video calls (Zoom, Teams) | 3–5 Mbps up and down |
| Live streaming, big uploads | 10 Mbps+ upload |
| Online gaming | Ping under 50 ms and low jitter matter more than speed |
Results below your plan speed are common. Wi-Fi depends heavily on distance, walls and the 2.4/5 GHz band; other devices on the network, old Cat 5 cables and VPNs also slow things down. For an accurate figure, connect by cable, pause other downloads and test two or three times.
The test exchanges data with the nearest server in Cloudflare's global network using the open-source @cloudflare/speedtest engine. If you need an official measurement for a complaint to your provider, follow the method your provider or regulator specifies.
FAQ
I pay for gigabit — why only 300–500 Mbps?
Over Wi-Fi, the device's wireless capability and router band are usually the limit. To see close to 1 Gbps, test on a computer with a gigabit port connected by a Cat 5e or better cable.
How much data does it use?
Accurate uses up to about 350 MB on fast lines; Data saver up to about 90 MB. Slow connections finish early and use much less.
Why do results change every time?
Speed varies with time of day (evenings are busy), wireless conditions and other devices. Test two or three times and look at the average.
Is my IP or result stored?
HonsTool stores neither. The test exchanges data directly with Cloudflare's servers, and your recent results stay only in your browser.
