Are Online File Converters Safe? How No-Upload Conversion Works
Converters that upload your files and converters that don't are completely different for privacy.
Updated:
Most converter sites upload your files
Typical online converters upload your file to their servers, convert it there and send the result back. Most say files are deleted after a while, but meanwhile your file sits on someone else's computer, and you can't easily check where that company is or how it handles data. For IDs, contracts or family photos, that's a real concern.
HonsTool converts inside your browser
Modern browsers support WebAssembly (fast programs on the web) and WebCodecs (built-in audio and video encoders), so they can do work that used to need desktop software. HonsTool downloads the conversion engine to your browser and converts on your device. Your file never leaves it.
- HEIC to JPG: the browser decodes and saves the photo itself
- Merge PDF: a PDF library combines pages on your device
- Background Remover: even the AI model is downloaded and run locally
Check it yourself
- Airplane-mode test: open a tool and convert once (so the engine downloads), then go offline and convert again. If it still works, nothing is going to a server.
- Developer tools: in desktop Chrome press F12, open the Network tab and convert. You won't see an upload the size of your file.
Checklist for converting safely
- For sensitive files, first check whether the tool uploads them.
- On shared computers, delete results from the Downloads folder when done.
- Keep originals alongside results; don't delete originals right away.
- Before sharing photos, make sure GPS location is removed. Images converted here don't keep location data.
Some conversions really need a server
Converting PDF to Word or Excel, or turning a web page URL into a PDF, needs large server-side software and therefore uploads. HonsTool doesn't offer those yet — and we'll only say "never uploaded" when it's true.

FAQ
There are ads — can ad companies see my files?
No. Ads are just displayed on the page; the files you convert are handled inside the page and never passed to ad scripts.
What does downloading an AI model store on my device?
Only the model files, in browser storage. Delete them anytime with "Delete stored AI models" in each AI tool or by clearing site data.
Does it work offline?
Tools you've used once keep their engine, so most work without a connection. Installing the app (PWA) makes it even easier.
