How to Open RAR and 7Z Files Without Installing Anything
Got a RAR or 7Z you can't open? Extract it right in your browser — no software needed.
Updated:
ZIP vs RAR vs 7Z
| Format | What it is | Built-in support |
|---|---|---|
| ZIP | The most common archive | Windows, Mac and most phones |
| RAR | Good compression and easy splitting, popular for sharing. Creating RAR needs paid WinRAR | Recent Windows 11 opens it in File Explorer; Mac and phones need an app |
| 7Z | Open-source 7-Zip format, usually the best compression | Recent Windows 11 only; otherwise an app |
That's why RAR and 7Z files often won't open on work PCs, Macs and phones.
Extracting in your browser
- Drop the file into Extract RAR or Extract 7Z. ZIP, TAR and GZ also work in Unzip.
- The contents are listed immediately. Click Save next to a file to download just that one.
- To get everything, use Extract all to a folder in desktop Chrome or Edge (keeps folders), or Download all as ZIP elsewhere.
Works even on locked-down work PCs where you can't install software. Files never leave your browser.
On iPhone and Android
The iPhone Files app and most Android file managers handle ZIP but often not RAR or 7Z. Open the same page in Safari or Chrome on your phone and pick the file. Very large archives may fail on phones because of memory; use a computer for those.
Garbled file names inside archives
Archives made on older Windows systems in Korean, Japanese or Chinese sometimes show file names as gibberish elsewhere because of legacy encodings. The extractor here detects the encoding automatically and shows names correctly.
When an archive won't extract
- Password-protected: not supported for security reasons. If you know the password, use a desktop archiver.
- Split archives (.part1.rar, .7z.001): need all pieces together and may not be supported.
- Damaged files: the download may be incomplete — download again.
Need to send several files yourself? Create ZIP makes an archive that opens everywhere.

FAQ
Can I create RAR files?
No. Creating RAR is restricted by its licence, so only extraction is offered. ZIP is the best choice for sending files.
What if the archive contains a virus?
The tool only extracts and lists files; it never runs them. Still, don't open executables (.exe etc.) from unknown sources.
Is there a size limit?
Computers usually handle several GB, depending on browser memory. On phones, keep it to a few hundred MB.
